Anatomical Terminology

Several words or terms are used to describe clinical anatomy. These are-

i. Symptom

When a patient talks about his disease, it is called a symptom.

ii. Sign

When the patient seeks the doctor, he is called Sign.

iii. Diagnosis

Diagnosis is the process of diagnosing or identifying a patient.

iv. Prognosis

Prognosis refers to the damage that can be caused by a disease.

v. Therapy

Medical service or treatment is called therapy.

vi. Inflammation

If any tissue of the body is damaged, then some reaction occurs there. These reactions are called Inflammation. Inflammation of an organ is followed by a suffix “itis” at the end of the name.

Such as- Appendicitis, Tonsillitis.

vii. Ectomy

When something is surgically removed from the body, it is called an ectomy. For example, if the Appendix and Tonsil are removed by surgery, they are called Appendectomy and Tonsillectomy respectively.

viii. Otomy

When an organ is surgically opened and closed again, it is called Otomy. For example, if the wall of our abdomen or abdomen is opened and closed again, it is called Laparotomy.

ix. Ostomy

Ostomy is when an organ is opened after surgery on the body. When something is done to open our trachea after surgery, it is called Tracheotomy.

x. Oscopy

Seeing something inside the body is called Oscopy.

xi. Plasty

Plasty is the act of attaching or repairing something somewhere on the body.

Different words or terms are used in anatomy to learn about different aspects of the body. Now we will know about them-

i. Superior / Cranical:

This term refers to the direction of the head or the upper part of the body. For example: Our Head is the Superior or Cranical of the Abdomen.

ii. Inferior / Caudal:

This term refers to the distance from the head or the lower part of the body. For example: Our Naval is the Inferior or Caudal of the Heart.

iii. Anterior / Ventral:

This term refers to the front part of our body. For example: Breast Bone is the Anterior or Ventral of the Spine.


iv. Posterior / Dorsal:

This term refers to the backside of the body. For example, the backbone is the posterior or dorsal of the heart.

v. Medial:

This term refers to the middle of the body. For example, the heart is the arm.

vi. Lateral:

This term refers to something that stays away from the middle of the body. For example, the arm of our hand is the Lateral of the Chest.

vii. Proximal:

The parts of our body that are towards the Solders Joint are called Proximal. Such as Elbow being Wrist’s Proximal.
